PSYCHOTHERAPY THE ROAD TO SELF DISCOVERY

San Francisco Psychotherapy - the road to discoveryPsychotherapy is a vehicle to help us understand our behaviors and actions that affect our relationships and daily lives. It is also a unique process that facilitates change in individuals and couples.

Through the unique and special relationship, the therapist works in collaboration with the individual/couple to identify problems and make the behavior changes necessary to resolve issues that have been causing difficulties.

Studies show that the most successful outcome in therapy is determined by the connection between the therapist and the individual/couple. The success of any therapeutic endeavor depends on the participants establishing an open, trusting and collaborative relationship or alliance (Frank & Gunderson, 1990).

I often used the analogy that before you enter therapy you are in the rooms and the lights are off. Therefore, you keep hitting the same walls and doors because you can’t see. During the therapeutic process individuals/couples gain more insights and understanding into their behavior and as a result they are in the room and the lights are on. You may still decide that you want to continue hitting the same wall or going through the same door, but now you are aware of what you are doing.

Finally, I believe that we don’t have a lot of choices in life. But the one choice we have is how we want to live our lives. Not how I want you to, or your parents want you to, but how you want to live your life. I believe that psychotherapy is a vehicle that can help you make that decision.
